There is a new scam that the IRS is trying to recover and safeguard from happening in the future. There were over 900 applications for tax preparer identification numbers sent in by incarcerated inmates or from those who had been incarcerated within the previous ten years. The IRS unknowingly sent them provisional identification numbers without the knowledge of their incarceration information due to the applicants omitting it from the application forms. More than three out of four did not record this information on their forms.
The IRS is suspending these identification numbers as well as securing that it does not happen again.
